Recently, NHTSA, Virginia TechTransportation Institute Release Findings of Breakthrough Research on Real-World Driver Behavior, Distraction and Crash Factors.  Driver inattention is the leading factor in most crashes and near-crashes, according to a landmark research report released today by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI).

Nearly 80 percent of crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes involved some form of driver inattention within three seconds before the event.  Primary causes of driver inattention are distracting activities, such as cell phone use, and drowsiness.  The research illustrates the potentially dire consequences that can occur while driving distracted or drowsy.  It’s crucial that drivers always be alert when on the road.

The Air Resources Board's (ARB) mission is to promote and protect public health, welfare, and ecological resources through effective reduction of air pollutants while recognizing and considering effects on the economy. As the Administration's key air quality legislative staff, ARB's Legislative Office serves as the conduit for transmission of technical expertise, while at the same time providing a policy context with which to view technical issues.

Open burning is generally prohibited in the Bay Area Air Quality Management District with the exception of seventeen (17) types of fires which are allowed by Regulation 5 Open Burning http://www.baaqmd.gov/dst/regulations/index.htm

Each allowable fire type may only be conducted during its permissive burn period. The Air Pollution Control Officer may extend the burn periods for orchard pruning and crop replacement fires. In addition, most allowable fires are limited to Burn Days, as declared by the Air District.

The link below provides access to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District's website where you can find additional information on permissive burning and links to the required forms/permits.

*Tylenol Arthritis Pain Caplet 100 count: Recall of all lots*

Audience: Consumers, Pharmacists

McNeil Consumer Healthcare and FDA notified consumers that it is expanding a voluntary recall to include all available product lots of TYLENOL Arthritis Pain Caplet 100 count bottles, with the distinctive red EZ-OPEN CAP (Full list of lot numbers provided in press release at link below). In November 2009, 5 lots of this product were recalled due to consumer reports of an unusual moldy, musty, or mildew-like odor that was associated with nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea. The odor is

caused by the presence of a chemical  2,4,6-tribromoanisole, believed to be the breakdown of a chemical used to treat wooden pallets that transport and store packaging materials. The health effects of this compound have not been well studied, and to date all of the observed events reported to McNeil were temporary and non-serious. Consumers who purchased TYLENOL Arthritis Pain Caplet 100 count bottles with the distinctive red EZ-OPEN CAP from the lots included in this recall should stop using

the product and contact McNeil for instructions on a refund or replacement.

Stop and Think

On September 2nd, the Napa Sheriff’s Office is launching its own, very simple, messaging campaign; “Stop and Think”.  “Stop and Think” is our effort to remind our residents, visitors, and ourselves, to slow down, stop, and think about how our actions affect others.

1.       Napa County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Vehicles will have “Stop and Think” bumper stickers on the right portion of the rear bumper.

2.       Napa County Sheriff’s POPP Deputies will be distributing 4”x 4” static cling window stickers (“Stop and Think”) to businesses and residents, water bottles (“Stop and Think”) to cyclists, and 4”x 4” rubber coasters (“Stop and Think”) to winery tasting rooms.

3.       Napa County Sheriff’s Deputies will be issuing 4”x 4” rubber markers (“Stop and Think”) to motorists/cyclists/field contacts in lieu of citations when a warning is appropriate.

Life can be complicated ……but our message is simple:  The Napa County Sheriff’s Office would like you to “Stop and Think” about how your actions affect others.
