HEAT ADVISORY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA 234 PM PDT TUE MAY 13 2014

A HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM PDT WEDNESDAY. * IMPACTS: EARLY SEASON HEAT EVENTS PUT A LIFE THREATENING STRESS ON THE ELDERLY AND OTHER PEOPLE ON CERTAIN MEDICATIONS. IN ADDITION... THOSE WORKING OUTSIDE OR EXPOSED TO THE HOT WEATHER CAN BE OVERCOME AND SUFFER FROM HEAT ILLNESSES. FIRST RESPONDERS WILL LIKELY SEE A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN CALLS AND INCIDENTS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

THIS HEAT ADVISORY IS BEING ISSUED UTILIZING A HEAT HEALTH WARNING SYSTEM. IT IS SPECIFIC TO THE AREAS INCLUDED IN THIS HEAT ADVISORY. IT IS TARGETED AT THE ELDERLY AND VERY YOUNG... AND THE INFIRM... WHO MIGHT BE MORE SENSITIVE TO HEAT AND THUS AT GREATER RISK. INDIVIDUALS WHO FALL INTO THIS CATEGORY SHOULD BE ESPECIALLY CAREFUL BY DRINKING PLENTY OF WATER AND SEEKING A COOLER LOCATION FOR THE DAY IF NO AIR CONDITIONING IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR LIVING QUARTERS. ALSO... ASK FOR A FRIEND OR RELATIVE TO CHECK ON YOU FREQUENTLY. WEAR LIGHTWEIGHT... LIGHT-COLORED... LOOSE-FITTING CLOTHING. WEAR A HAT TO SHIELD YOURSELF FROM THE SUN. YOUNG CHILDREN AND PETS SHOULD NEVER BE LEFT IN VEHICLES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DURING WARM OR HOT WEATHER.

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN POSSIBLE... RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE. TO REDUCE THE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY - CALL 911.
